Today we did something really special and so different, something Lily told me was actually “the best adventure activity EVER”.

As soon as I saw this event crop up on my Facebook events feed (what else is Facebook for, really?!), I had to book on. The event was titled “Spell Jar Making with Owl Handling” – I knew instantly that Lily would love it. Plus, it was at one of my favourite places, Cattows Farm.

Before our timeslot, we saw Splat the hawk head off on his Hawk Walk across the pumpkin fields. It was a beautiful day for it, and looked like another great experience.

We were early so enjoyed our third visit to Cattows Farm this month already, including a lovely walk around the fields and a coffee in the tearoom! With Hawkwise there too over half term, you’re sure to have a fantastic day out with everything you need for all the family.

We went over to the Hawkwise marquee and were met by Becky in her witch’s outfit, who led us in to their beautifully decorated tent. It was such a welcoming way to start the experience, and I wasn’t expecting it at all.

There were owls and Splat the hawk all lined up by the “gravestones”, and then a special spell-making area hidden around the corner.

Lily is only 4 so isn’t one for “scary” Halloween, just loves all the fun decorations and excuse to do some Halloween activities.

This was just the biggest treat for her this Halloween and so magical too. She worked with Becky on a special “spell jar” where she got to fill a jar with her own “happy things”, including a scroll which she drew happy things on (well, randomly, a happy mouse!), glitter, coloured sand and more amazing things.

She loves all kinds of crafts and activities making things so she was in her element here!

She was allowed to pick a special little tealight to put inside it to take home with her too, and was able to talk to Becky about all the lovely things she put inside her jar, including the colours, shapes, feel of things and how they make her feel.

It meant that she got to really think about what she put inside it, making it such a special experience for her.

Once she had finished her jar, she was able to choose an owl to hold. She sat in a special throne, and had the incredible experience of holding an owl.

For those who didn’t want to do the whole spell experience you could also meet and hold the owls for £2.50 too.

Lily was so proud of herself for holding the owl and it meant so much to her as she truly loves these birds.

To top it all off, she was then presented with a special Certificate of Wizardry to complete the beautiful experience.

Hawkwise Falconry visits locations all over the county for events, birthday parties and more to give children and adults of all ages and abilities some amazing and tailored experiences.

She has also worked with SEN families, and so knows how to adapt her experiences for different abilities, which is really fantastic. Lily is still only 4, so I never know how confident she will be getting involved in activities, however Becky made her feel so welcome and happy, and she truly loved every minute.

Lily has gone to bed tonight with her special jar and nightlight from today on her bedside to give her “all the happy dreams”. I really can’t thank Hawkwise enough for such a lovely morning, and making this Halloween so special for her.
