We’ve always enjoyed New Walk museum and count ourselves lucky to live in a city with such a fantastic and free museum to visit.
It is only a small museum, but it is packed with artefacts and there’s always something new to explore every time you visit.
Our favourite area has always been the dinosaurs, as Lily loves playing with the interactive features and pretending to be a palaeontologist, but she has also loved exploring the new Egyptian gallery upstairs, which is beautiful!

I always love the portrait of Sir David Attenborough in the dinosaur gallery too!
The museum often has fun events for families there, and we’ve been to a few craft/activity sessions and those celebrating different events, such as Diwali. We’ve been going since she was tiny, and she met some snakes at an animal event in one gallery, while trying her hand at some interactive sensory learning with suitcases for the Spark Arts festival at another event.
She has also always loved the small sensory area for children, with items to play with for the little ones in its own area. It’s only small, but she’s always remembered it is there!

The toilets have also recently been upgraded and are really accessible for families and those in wheelchairs too, and being located near the station means the whole museum is easy to get to – not to mention the beautiful New Walk that it is situated on.
There’s also a Costa café in the museum with children’s lunch boxes and snacks (for adults too!), which is always a selling point when looking for days out with kids! The down side is that you have to cross the little gift shop to get there, which Lily always wants to explore too, haha!

What’s more, the staff are really friendly, and there are often new exhibits in the galleries celebrating local people or arts, which are always good to check out as Leicester is such a fun and diverse city, with so much to celebrate.
We are truly lucky to have such a beautiful place to visit in our city, and it’s really worth keeping an eye on social media for their regular free or cheap events for families.
